[main] =>
Clouds float across the smooth-as-glass surface of the majestic Kennebec as it flows past; the city of Augusta. Just steps away on the broad avenues and side streets of the capital you'll find history in the making, bustling commerce and the business of government under way.

First inhabited in 1629 and locally known as; Cushnoc or "head of tide", Augusta rapidly grew into a center of trade. Within 30 years, it was abandoned and left unoccupied for three-quarters of a century. In 1754 Old Fort Western was built. The fort holds the dubious honor of being the mustering point for Benedict Arnold's failed march up the Kennebec to Quebec.

No visit to Augusta would be complete without a visit to the Capitol Complex, home to the Maine State Museum, Capitol Park and of course The State House. The governor resides at Blaine House, named after James G. Blaine one of the most illustrious political leaders of the state.

Augusta has long kept its light under a bushel basket, but with all that there is to do, see and experience in our capital city, no trip through Maine's Kennebec Valley will be complete without spending at least a day or two here.

Augusta
Augusta
